We have had such an incredible month.  It has been such a pleasure to watch all of the progress being made.  Attitudes have shifted.  At the beginning of the program everyone was a little reserved and just getting a feel for the program.  Now these women truly believe that they can take on any task that is handed to them, and they do!  The energy level of the group has gone up significantly.  Each of them shows up ready to go, and I know that this energy is transferring to their daily lives as well.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In addition to all these important changes, there of course have been dramatic physical changes.  This morning we did our final weigh in and measurements and the results were too good to keep to ourselves!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Meg - lost a total of 7" and 14lbs.  Amazing!&lt;br /&gt;Amber - lost a total of 5.5"  and 6.2lbs to make for a dramatic shift in body composition.&lt;br /&gt;Meghan - lost a total of 5.5" and 5lbs&lt;br /&gt;Robin - lost a total of 2" and 6 lbs remarkable results for someone who was already lean and fit.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;These ladies are an inspiration to me and many others.  They have worked hard for the past three months and should be very proud of themselves.  I know I am.  Great work ladies! Working out in a group can be very motivational.  Not only is there a bit of healthy competition, but the support and encouragement is amazing to watch. Washington and attributes the ease and enjoyment her hike to her CrossFit training.  In the last 3 months she has gained the strength and endurance necessary for her climb, but also the mental fortitude to make it to the top with a smile on her face.  During her training at CrossFit Boston Devorah has learned just what she is capable of and how to push herself further.  She has trained her physical and mental toughness and it certainly paid off during her 10 hour hike up Mt. Washington.  Her next goal is Mt. We took measurements from the chest, waist, hips and thigh and these women trimming down.  On average these women have each lost 2.5 inches in the short two months that they have been involved in this program.  All of the women have reported an increase in energy and better functioning in their jobs and home life.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Some other measurable results can be seen in the workouts that we time and score.&lt;br /&gt;On June 17th we performed a 15 minute workout.  The women had to complete as many rounds as possible in 15 minutes of 5 pullups, 10 pushups, and 15 squats.  (each of these movements can be modified for each individual's needs)  We repeated this workout again on August 7th and all of the women improved their score, which means that they got more work done in the same period of time, which means they are getting fitter!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Robin improved her score from 6 rounds to 9!&lt;br /&gt;Meg completed 7.5 rounds the first time and 10 last time!&lt;br /&gt;Amber's score jumped from 6 to 10!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Great work ladies.  You are all becoming fitter, leaner and healthier.  I'm very proud of the work you put in and the dedication you have shown. I have to say that the women who have been the most successful have kept up their journaling in all three of these areas.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Here is a excerpt from Meg's journal back at the very beginning of June on the 2nd day of the program.  She thought deeply about what this program meant and answered the question, "Who are you becoming?".&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;I was an exceptional graduate student up until the moment my program told me to specialize; far from the department's idea of stepping into deeper waters to expand my knowledge &amp;amp; help me think and study more profoundly, I felt the directive aimed at closing doors on me, and shutting down myriad avenues of inquiry. My response -- refusing to consider their reasons, let alone consider acquiescing -- was immature and unproductive, but I learned something powerful in that refusal. I am a creature of potential, and I love seeing what I might be able to do more than I love actually doing those things. In seeing potential, I don't have to face fear or failure, and my imagination has always been stronger than my will to succeed.&lt;br /&gt;This summer I am un-coupling my thought and imagination from my pursuit of the infinite, and focusing on physical activty, on literally diving in to anything and everything. This is a new pattern for me, as even my previous flirtations with fitness, or really any kind of activity, have been intellectually grounded and rationalized. I used to work out because a healthy body makes for a healthy mind, and now I am working out because a healthy body is just that: a healthy body. My sole goal for this program is to learn to trust not thinking, to learn to trust instinct, habit, intuition, motion, and motivation, to learn to bypass the incredible heights to which my imagination can soar and the incredible depths to which it can drop and just do something without that constant prophesying.&lt;br /&gt;I want my body to become as worthwhile to me as my mind, not only as a tool, but as an end in itself. I made a list of things I wanted to learn when I left graduate school, and I was astounded to see how physical those goals were: for a woman who's lived her entire life in her head, I've got some serious desire to become an athlete and to connect to the world with my body. The list is long and contains musical and creative pursuits (drums, mandolin, pastry, pottery), performative pursuits (aerial silks, juggling, capoiera), and practical pursuits (driving, gardening, carpentry) and more. All of these are skills that require physical learning and capacity that I hve spent my life too scared to acquire. &lt;span style="color: rgb(255, 0, 0);"&gt;While I can't promise that I'm done with fear, I can promise that I'm done accepting and rationalizing my fear. These ladies have been working very hard. I think Molly and Marisa really enjoyed being a part of the group and seeing how hard everyone is working.  They left smiling and sweaty. Bring someone you think may be interested in joining the fall program so that they can get a better sense of what CrossFit is.  Or just bring someone you want to share your success with! We all had the opportunity to try out some new paleo recipes.  No one can say that eating paleo is boring or hard.  That was some of the best food I have had in a long time.  The menu included coconut crusted chicken (which tasted like donuts to me!), slow roasted salmon, watermelon and red onion salad, swiss chard with pine nuts and raisins, zuchinni salad, and a fabulous orange sherbert with dark chocolate and raspberries (we need that recipe!).  All in all it was a great night.  We'll have to plan another one soon. It was a great way to try some out some new recipes that are paleo friendly.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Here are some links to the recipes if you want to try them out.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/08/health/nutrition/08recipehealth.html?_r=1&amp;amp;scp=5&amp;amp;sq=swiss%20chard&amp;amp;st=cse"&gt;Swiss Chard&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href="http://cavemanfood.blogspot.com/2009/07/coconut-chicken-fingers-with-spicy.html"&gt;Coconut Chicken&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Here are Meg's recipes:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Slow-roasted Salmon&lt;/span&gt;:&lt;br /&gt;~ 2lbs salmon, pin bones removed&lt;br /&gt;~ 1 lemon&lt;br /&gt;~ 1 bunch chives (good with other herbs or pesto, as well)&lt;br /&gt;~1/2 cup olive oil&lt;br /&gt;salt &amp;amp; pepper&lt;br /&gt;Preheat oven to 250F. Oil baking dish, or foil-lined baking dish lightly. Thinly slice lemon &amp;amp; lay a few slices on the oiled dish. Lay out fish, and mix chopped chives with remaining olive oil. Spread over fish evenly, sprinkle with salt &amp;amp; pepper, use lemon slices to cover any particularly thin areas of the fillet. Put fish in oven, uncovered, until it reaches an internal temperature of 125F (fully cooked), about 25 minutes. Serve warm or at room temperature.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Zucchini Salad&lt;/span&gt;:&lt;br /&gt;2 zucchini, thinly sliced&lt;br /&gt;~2 handfuls fresh herbs ( I used mint &amp;amp; thai basil, but any relatively soft herb works well),  thinly sliced&lt;br /&gt;kosher salt&lt;br /&gt;pepper &amp;amp; lemon juice to taste&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Toss zucchini slices with kosher salt &amp;amp; set in colander to drain for 20-40 minutes. Rinse well (I always skip this step because I love salt), pat dry, and arrange an single, overlapping layer on a platter (or in a pie dish, this makes a lovely terrine if you're bored). &amp;amp; scatter a handful of herbs over the zucchini, sprinkle some pepper, and layer zucchini &amp;amp; herbs until you're out of them. Cover tightly with plastic wrap and leave to sit in the fridge or at room temperature for up to a day, the flavors will just mingle nicely. I made note of my weaknesses and worked through them with a mind to proper form and function.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Today I sweated, a lot.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Today I did a workout that I thought would lay me out, and then I did more.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Today I jumped rope for 250 skips, 50 skips at a time, until I beat the damn rope.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Today I jumped, I squatted, I hopped, I lunged, I threw, I caught, I pushed, and I pulled.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But most importantly, today I Finished. They did a great job on their team workout, sharing reps of press, push press, back squat and front squat and then tossing the wall ball.  It was a tough workout, especially the front squats which still felt a little unfamiliar since we don't practice them a lot.  Look for more of this movement and others that have been forgotten since the first month of instruction.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Dinner is still scheduled for Wednesday night at Robin's house. If you weren't here, you missed out!  We laughed a lot, Meghan snorted a little.  We worked on handstands, box jumps and ring dips.  After getting more comfortable with those movements, M&amp;amp;M did a team workout called Tail Pipe.  While one person rows 250m the other person has to hold two kettlebells in the rack position, 3 rounds.  So rowing faster is not just for your own good anymore, especially after you have held the kettlebells and know how heavy they get!  Great job girls and thanks for coming in.  I had such a fun morning with you.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Don't forget that the Roller Derby is tonight.  Come out and support Becky and the NutCrackers. Robin's pants received a lot of attention today (mostly from me I guess, I loved them).  At one point we decided that they were magic pants and I think she proved that during the workout.  Robin took on the 20# dumbbells for three rounds of 15 dumbbell thrusters, 150 skips on the rope, and 5 perfect pushups!  She told me in the middle of the workout that she had never done dumbbell thrusters with that much weight before.  Must have been the pants that got her through it!  Great work by everyone today on a tough workout.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Our group Paleo dinner will be next Wednesday July 22nd at Robin's house.  Some of us already have recipes picked out and there is rumor of a tequila and coconut milk drink in the making! I was very proud of&lt;br /&gt;myself, and was surprised, even shocked, to review in my journal that two&lt;br /&gt;months ago, my first dead lift weight was twenty-five pounds and on that day&lt;br /&gt;I wrote, "That was a bit challenging!" What a distance to have come in such&lt;br /&gt;a short time. I feel myself getting stronger, telling myself more positive&lt;br /&gt;things in my own mind, even when challenged (because NOW I know I can do&lt;br /&gt;more than I ever think I can do!) and am enjoying feeling stronger in life&lt;br /&gt;moments outside of the gym!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As far as nutrition goes, I have decided, for now anyway, to keep rice in&lt;br /&gt;and basically take out all the rest of the grains (for the most part!) I&lt;br /&gt;feel MUCH MUCH better without wheat, but know I do feel better when cutting&lt;br /&gt;out all grains, as I did it for about a week or two a few weeks ago. I see&lt;br /&gt;the nutrition part as going for it when I can, making better choices nearly&lt;br /&gt;all the time, and allowing myself to ease into this new lifestyle rather&lt;br /&gt;than slam myself. I know cutting out all grains and dairy feels GREAT and I&lt;br /&gt;intend to take that on for at least a month, but just not yet. So I've been looking for alternative dessert choices.  I think I found a good one.  This custard &lt;a href="http://www.marksdailyapple.com/dairy-free-custard/"&gt;recipe&lt;/a&gt; from Mark Sisson at &lt;a href="http://www.marksdailyapple.com/"&gt;Mark's Daily Apple&lt;/a&gt; looks delicious.  And it is not just any custard it is a "Frozen Primal Custard".  It has to be good.  In Mark's words, it "combines the best parts of all my favorites – the sweetness of a cookie, the texture of a chilled cake, the satisfying warm flavor of a gooey brownie."  I am going to attempt to make it this weekend and I'll let you all know how it is.  The real test will be if it can stave off my cravings for Dulce de Leche ice cream!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;How would you all feel about organizing a group dinner where we all seek out great paleo recipes and get together for a delicious and healthy meal?  I think it would be a lot of fun. The sun was out and I was able to get in some great workouts on the beach with my mom and sister.  We did sprints, which somehow always feel better on the beach, burpees in the sand, handstand pushups against the beach wall, presses, deadlifts, and squats with rocks and logs.  Everywhere I looked there was another 'tool' that we could use for our workout.  The first two days it was just myself and my mom who has recently become addicted to CrossFit.  In the past I have always invited my family to come for a jog or walk on the beach and was always turned down.  This weekend I asked my mom if she wanted to come workout and her reply was, "sure, what time?"  Then after seeing the two of us have fun during our morning workout, my sister asked if she could join as well.  It just goes to show that if you lead by example eventually people will get off their lazy butts and follow. Great energy for that workout!&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;You have survived one month of CrossFit, congratulations.  There is very evident progress being made.  Yesterday we worked on a heavy triple of a back squat which was your very first workout on the first day of class.  Not even knowing the numbers, I could see a dramatic improvement in your form as well as your confidence under the bar.  You all increased your back squat significantly from just one month ago, and you should all be very proud of yourselves.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Today after yoga, we took more pictures and re-did our measurements and weight.  I'm sure there have been remarkable changes in these areas as well.  We will take pictures and measurements every month to track our progress. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Tomorrow and Friday we will use a portion of our class time to discuss nutrition.  I am going to ask you all to make some pretty significant changes in your diet, but I can guarantee it will skyrocket the results you are already seeing. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Please post to comments yesterday's back squat weight as well as your previous back squat weight.  I would also love to hear any other changes you have become aware of in the last month.  Do you have more energy?  Are you sleeping better? But sleeping couldn't possibly be more enjoyable than Medicine Ball Cleans now could it?  I understand you all have a choice everyday.  You can choose to stay in bed or you can choose to do something that is not always easy but usually fun. The handstand in particular take a bit of courage.  Being upside down is not our natural state and so we resist it.  When we were younger we were more fearless and could attempt things like this much easier. There was a little bit more grunting and groaning today.  Everyone is starting to feel the work that we have been doing.  More energy, and more body awareness are some of the things that we are experiencing right now. Most of our workouts will be timed or scored so that we are able to see your progress when we repeat a workout.  There is always motivation when you are working out in a group, but there is no better motivation than beating yourself.  It means you are becoming stronger and fitter and leaving your old self in the dust! &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We performed a modified version of a workout called "Cindy".  Your score is the amount of rounds you can complete in the given time period.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As Many Rounds As Possible in 10 minutes of:&lt;br /&gt;5 pullups&lt;br /&gt;10 pushups&lt;br /&gt;15 squats&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Did you ever think that you could get such a great workout in 10 minutes? The squat is a highly functional movement that you likely perform many times throughout your day.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The functional movements that we focus on during this program are not patented or trademarked and require no special equipment because they are the natural movements of the body.  We are not trying to sell you some gadget we invented, we are trying to help you improve the quality of your daily life.   The improvements and progress you make here in the gym carry over into your daily life. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Keep practicing that squat form.  Try to become conscious of the way your body moves throughout your day, not just when you come to the gym. As we lay quietly on our sides, Devorah asked us to bring to mind three things that we are grateful for.  This is something I try to make a nightly habit before I go to sleep. What a great group of women we have.  We spent our time talking a bit about our goals, which seem to be similar for the whole group and include gaining energy, losing weight, overcoming our fears and engaging in new activities!  We then took some baseline measurements and weight as well as photographs.  It is going to be so exciting to look back in three months and see how far we have all come.  Tomorrow is the first yoga session with Devorah and it will begin at 8:45am.  Remember to bring a yoga mat and some water with you. In order to guide women through the program, she really needed to experience it for herself.  She has been working with Jen for 2 weeks now and wanted to share her thoughts:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p style="font-style: italic;" class="EC_MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Arial;font-size:100%;color:black;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: 12pt; font-family: Arial; color: black;"&gt;At the end of Week Two: I DID IT!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I had been so afraid of beginning training at CrossFit: What will it be like? Will I be able to do any of the workouts? What about lifting free weights? I am a forty-five year old mother, for goodness sake, I have never done THAT before! Will I be able to walk the next day? All these fears and more streamed through my brain in the weeks leading up to my beginning training. The unexpected surprise for me is that I LOVE it! Yes, it is challenging and difficult, and yes I was more sore after the first day than I could imagine, but the benefits ALREADY way outweigh the costs! I was pleasantly surprised to fit into a pair of pants, after four workouts, that haven’t fit me in well over a year. I already notice my appetite is less, my need for sleep is less and I have more energy than I have had in as long as I can remember. The best part of it, though, is the feeling of accomplishment and physical and mental strength. My muscles are activated, reminding me of what I am doing, pretty much every moment of the day.  I am challenging myself three times a week beyond what I knew was possible and I feel GREAT about it! I know there will be more challenges ahead, but I am beginning to see this as something positive in so many ways, rather than just purely scary. “That isn’t me,” is what I said to myself the first time I heard of CrossFIt. June 1st</title><content type='html'>We had our informational meeting last night and while we have had a lot of interest in the program, we have not had the commitment we need to begin as soon as we had hoped.  As a result, we have decided to postpone the start date to June 1st.  If you are interested in becoming a part of this program please register using the link to the right.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We have also changed the schedule of the morning CrossFit classes.  They will now be at 8am.  the morning yoga will remain at 9am on Tuesday mornings.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If for some reason your schedule doesn't allow you to attend all morning or all evening classes you can float between the morning and evening.  The first 12 CrossFit sessions will be mandatory, so if you miss the 3rd session in the morning section, you must make up that same session in the evening or on a one on one basis with Jen at an additional cost.  The first 12 sessions are where we teach you all of the movements that will be used throughout the program.  Your understanding of these movements is imperative as we continue forward with the program.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Please continue to spread the word about this fantastic program so we can ensure a start date of June 1st. I would try to time my workouts to avoid the football team at the school gym. I was afraid of making a fool of myself. I was a little intimidated by weightlifting to begin with and very intimidated by these large, loud guys. I soon realized that the football team had over 200 players and that at any given point during the day there were bound to be ten or more players in the gym. My choices were to deal with it, or not workout. I decided I would deal with it. I worked my way in on sets, and minded my own business. They didn't throw stones at me, they weren't rude, in fact they probably didn't even notice me. I decided that the benefits of weightlifting were more important than my fear of being judged in the gym. -Jen&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="color: rgb(102, 51, 51);"&gt;During this program, it is our aim to teach you the foundational movements of CrossFit, including weightlifting so that you feel completely comfortable in our gym. Having a good base of knowledge eliminates some of the fear and resistance that many women have toward weightlifting. We will introduce you to weighted movements using barbells, dumbbells, kettlebells and medicine balls. We will be squatting, pressing and pulling. These movements will help you build strength, increase bone density, and improve your ability to function effectively in everyday life. Covey tells us that to be proactive "means that as human beings we are responsible for our own lives.  Our behavior is a function of our decisions, not our conditions.  We have the initiative and the responsibility to make things happen."&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="color: rgb(102, 51, 51);font-family:lucida grande;font-size:130%;"  &gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="color: rgb(102, 51, 51);font-family:lucida grande;font-size:130%;"  &gt;It is important to step back and reflect on our goals.  Why haven't we achieved them yet?  What is holding us back?
