Are you all interested in spending an entire hour discussing nutrition? (How to eat, when to eat, what to eat.) I would be more than happy to do this if you all think it will be beneficial. In the meantime here are some sites to check out to get you started.

The Zone Diet
Paleo Zone info from a CrossFit Favorite - Robb Wolf
You should all be keeping food journals. If you haven't, start now! If you have and are interested in how many calories or the percentage of the macro nutrients (protein, fat, carbs) you are getting you can enter that information in at FitDay and the website will do the work for you.
What are some of the major questions and concerns you all have about nutrition so that I can plan my attack?

I think it's definitely worthwhile to discuss nutrition. I wish in some ways we'd done nutrition before we started, or at the beginning, because while it'd good to track what we "were" eating before we changed out habits, getting into bad habits with food in an attempt to sustain energy isn't very good either. Having the right fuel for this kind of activity seems like its' really important!
ReplyDeleteI'd love to talk about suggested foods to maintain a good protein/fat/carb balance at home and in easy to carry items (I know eggs are a HUGE one :) ) Sometimes it's hard to maintain good diet on the go, and suggestions to get us moving and easy ways to calculate blocks or percentages by knowing foods seems like a good start. Ok, enough out of me!
ReplyDeleteI'm kind of war of giving up one of our workouts for nutrition (greedy me), but I really do want to start talking about this ASAP. Some of the things I'd love to go over are knowing what foods/nutrients support energy, muscle growth, weight loss, or other specific targets; thinking about food on-the-go, as Amber mentioned; learning to deal with cravings (healthy or otherwise); adapting some of the principles of PB/Paleo/Zone/etc. to eating out or eating with friends; ... my list could go on for a while.
ReplyDeleteI also want to learn ways to support variety and non-habitual healthy eating (I'd go crazy if I ate the same thing for breakfast lunch or dinner with great regularity, I'm already feeling it from quick breakfasts before our sessions), and I think that's actually the biggest -- I love food and I love eating and I want help thinking about healthy patterns more than single healthy choices, if that makes sense.
Hey y'all! Just want to chime in on my observations from afar. You all have been doing great with picking up the new movements, working hard to increase your intensity.
ReplyDeleteThe nutrition piece is the next step. It is essential to your success of performing better, feeling better, and looking better. Once you begin dialing in your nutrition these all fall into place.
Take the time, make it happen. You have a great leader and she has a lot of great information to pass on to you. Get some . . .
I think that it would be a great addition. If Jen and we all are willing maybe we could add an extra session. Perhap a Thursday AM would work? Or we could all find an evening to do it, bring a healthy dish and get together to talk nutrition.
ReplyDelete@Casey: that'd be awesome -- a potluck dinner (or breakfast!) of healthy dishes and time to talk about nutrition and hang out!
ReplyDelete@Neal: thanks for the pep talk! & you're right, we do have a great leader, Jen's been amazing to work with.
@Casey: I love that idea, of course it counts on Jen's availability, along with everyone elses! Not missing a workout would be great, but I definitely want to get the nutritional aspect of this going,I know I'm making a lot of stupid mistakes just because I *think* something might be the right thing to eat, or I'm just really hungry from working out!
ReplyDelete@Neal: Thank you! I know we're all trying pretty damn hard :)
Sorry I didn't make it Friday, I did the 6pm with Rafael and was sufficiently punished! It was Mary's birthday Thursday night and I was so proud of her when she said goodbye at midnight while I was dancing to Michael Jackson...I left at 1:30. But despite leaving early she didn't make it either...so the lesson is keep dancing for me. I have to go to the Slutcracker DVD release party Sunday night and it's a wild group...I'm going to do my very best to make it Monday. I haven't been writing down what i'm eating but I have lost weight in the past just from doing that! I'm willing to have the potluck meeting at my house, i'm 5minutes from the gym.
